CALL for Participants
Unity Day! 2017 June 10th explores the following themes and sub-themes:
• It is a call to join-in with hopes of a response of Yes! Yebo! Si! Ki and etc.
• It occurs at a specific moment, yet, it is not limited by it. Unity Day! joins-in so as to continue broad community-affirming activism, and to reignite fresh creative impulse.
This particular program specifically appreciates Unity as a “Sign for Life: Affirmation, Togetherness and People’s Power!”, within the unlikely, unrecognized and unknown partnerships of Albert Einstein, Paul Robeson, Marion Anderson and W.E.B. Du Bois. It affirms a spirit of * Ubuntu, Masakhane, Harambee, Trabajemos Juntos, Mini Wiconi, and much more.
We would appreciate YOUR participation in this event on June 10, 2017 along with PLEASANT Institute in association with Cat Sparks Art! in our effort to affirm art as a unifying and healing force. It is a power in the hands of all living beings to create and affirm contact with the environment and others.
What we need:
A possible 2-3min FaceTime or Skype presence (on the event day) along with other artists, activists, scholars, healers, and care-givers from around the US and world, and/or an up-to-10min video or recording of you doing your work. In either or both forms we ask that you address:
What unity means to you.
The necessity (or not) of unity as a world encompassing and transformative resource.
How themes of unity work through out your work and associations.
How might unity transcend time to include those of the past and present in one empathetic concern.
We of PLEASANT Institute and Cat Sparks Art are creating a a community program called Unity Day for a June 10, 2017 time slot in Barrio Logan neighborhood, San Diego. The area has recently been declared a National Historic Site as it is home to the incredibly significant Barrio Logan Chicano Park and Chicano Park murals. Our studios, Cat Sparks Art, PLEASANT Institute and CAT Café are all located here. We serve various homeless, immigrant and beyond communities of the region with media literacy, continued education, multiple arts, and etc. programming. We have begun a regular relationship with the Malcolm X Library and Performing Arts Center in nearby Valencia Park in hopes of broadening our outreach potential. One of our programs there, Pre-exhibition Gala for Signs for Life, has inspired us to develop a special initiative called tentatively, Unity, a Sign for Life: Affirmation, Togetherness and People’s Power! The sub-text for this program is: The unlikely, unrecognized and unknown partnerships of Albert Einstein, Paul Robeson, Marion Anderson and W.E.B. Du Bois. Prior to both Smithsonian Institute Signature Events—Signs for Life [see: Pleasant Institute website], we will do a Re-Ignition ‘Nite program on Albert Einstein’s publicly suppressed, yet, highly vocal devotion to various Civil Rights, Pan-Africanist and anti-racist ventures. The culmination of all these listed programs is Unity Day!
Unity Day! will feature a micro-parade; art making sessions; music making sessions; a reading of Einstein’s famous Worlds Fair 1940 address, and more. We are contacting you to ask your help in making the event truly global and far reaching. The effort would involve your 2-3min FaceTime or Skype presence along with other artists, activists, scholars, healers, and care-givers from around the US and world. If you like, we would be happy to play an up-to-10min video or recording of you doing your work. Planning is going on now, so, we need to find out your availability soon. Again, June 10, 2017. Unfortunately no specific time can be chosen until we know the schedules of all those who might join us in this Global gathering.
